Coffey was generous enough to send me an ARC eBook of both Harvest Moon and its sequel Snow Moon for me to read in return for a review and so here I am finally working my way through the stack of eBooks that have been awaiting a look and finally arriving to the much anticipated A NEW WORLD high fantasy series.

Right out of the gate this book was off to a good start as in the opening paragraph I found myself already finding common ground with the protagonist: “I loved spring break…It was because I got out of school for a week and it usually always landed on my birthday.” Yes, yes, and until college yes.

Coffey has succeeded in writing a fun fast-paced high fantasy story filled with faeries, trolls, elves, magic, love, prophecies, and battle. Harvest Moon is definitely full of imagination and written with a love for fantasy as it takes old myths and legends and forges them into something new. This realm is fanciful and very typical high fantasy.

I must say it was pretty dang fast paced for Jessa though. Literally no time for her to get used to the faerie realm, to being queen, nada. It was just oh up ya go! Now here’s a magical flower, a crown, a fiancé, and a sword now go out there and make us all proud, kid! It sure was a heck of a lot to expect from someone they all know has been living in a totally different world from theirs for her whole life which kinda made it all rather unrealistic (even for fantasy). The only thing that sort of saves it is that it keeps the plot fast-paced and the fact that Jessa freaks out alongside the reader with the speed of things being dropped on her shoulders. #mosteventfuldayever

Flaws are easy to gloss over really, particularly as the fantasy genre is quite forgiving in this regard. But even so this book was a quick read full of conflict and choices. Do I think that the book overlooked a few opportunities to really sink its teeth into a moment? Yes, but there are plenty of really great ideas and elements in this book as well.

Harvest Moon is the first book in the New World series, a series of books filled with magical creatures, hideous enemies, and heart-thrumming heroes. Prepare yourself to be submerged into a realm of high fantasy teeming with all that this genre entails.
