Book One: OBSIDIAN

I AM SO ANNOYED.

If you read my review for book one in the Lux series then you’ll know how hard I fell for it. I really enjoyed becoming wrapped up in this world of aliens living among us and ended up binge-reading it way late into the night. Obviously come morning I had to buy the sequel for my Kindle and then came the disappointment.

Yes, a lot of people loved this book because a) it continues this cool world and b) Daemon isn’t such a jerk to Katy. Both are very valid reasons to love this book and I agree with them. What I have issue with is the endless drama. Some people love that type of thing but I just don’t happen to be one of those people. Just not my cup of tea. I have a limit and unfortunately this one maxed it out with all the gusto of a Twilight novel.

I should have seen this coming. I should have seen this coming!! I’ve mentioned it before with Armentrout’s books how they’re very CW Network so really this shouldn’t have surprised me but alas…I remain bummed haha

The ceaseless push and pull between Katy and Daemon plus the added complication named Blake in this book all felt very Twilight. It was honestly infuriating. Like blah blah blah, we all know Katy and Daemon are endgame so just get over your denial and focus on the D.O.D. parked in your backyard, okay? I know I’m biased because I personally find Daemon attractive, but I still feel that Katy resisted way too much and for way too long considering the circumstances. Like he full on spilled his alien secrets to you, saved your life multiple times, and has confessed more than once in honest seriousness how much he likes you, and yet you still think he hates you????? Girl, you need to sit down and admit the truth to yourself. You like him. He likes you. Move on. There are evil Arum and nefarious government officials lurking about! Why not try focusing on that?

Furthermore Katy starts suffering from “over-confident heroine who thinks she knows everything and can do anything but actually knows nothing and becomes a nuisance in hero’s butt by running into danger over and over” Syndrome. Yes Katy, you can do cool things now because Daemon saved you with his alien powers, woo-hoo. But that does not mean you hide important information or pursue dangerous leads or make arrogant conclusions without consulting your alien friends! On one hand I like how spunky, tough, and self-reliant Katy is as a character but at the same time she really made some straight up stupid decisions.

GAH. I don’t even have the energy to get into those supposed “plot twists” aka characters who turned out to be not so squeaky clean in their motives. #soobvious

If you enjoy a cool supernatural world with fast-paced books richly laced with romance then I honestly think you’d like this series because on that front they’re really really good. I personally hate too much romantic drama that straight up overtakes the plot and impulsive ill-equipped characters that don’t know when to quit so I will not be continuing this series but don’t let my frustrations stop you from giving it a try. There’s a huge fandom for these books so far be it from me to keep you from joining the joy. I mean, I did really enjoy The Darkest Star, the first book in the companion series (Origin), so I might keep an eye out for that sequel, but as far as the Lux series goes I think I’m going to hop off the train here.

I’m not trying to make you feel bad if you love this series. I’m seriously happy that you do! I just happen to, uh, not. Just my lil grumpy opinion haha

After diving into some of Armentrout’s books though I am more interested in this whole alien theme so let me know if there are any similar books you really enjoyed and I’ll try to check them out! 🙂

P.S. In my review for Obsidian I mentioned how I don’t like the covers for this series, well…after reading this book they make sense. The cover was a warning of the content within and I should’ve listened haha
