Winter War Awakening (Blood Rose Rebellion #3) by Rosalyn Eves (2018)
YA Fiction | Historical Fantasy
“The Binding is broken. Mátyás is alive. And Anna Arden is on the run.
It seems, yet again, that breaking the Binding has shattered the world. And the only hope of mending it is Anna and Mátyás, working together. But it’s never that simple, is it? The praetheria, the creatures once held captive by the spell, are now waging war against the Austro-Hungarian empire. And they are holding Noémi hostage–using her life to manipulate Anna and Mátyás, like marionettes on a string.
Gábor has elected to stay behind, to fight in the Hungarian army’s resistance, while Anna and Mátyás search for their beloved Noémi–a mission doomed from the start, cloaked in praetherian magic. Magic that relies on illusion and misdirection. Eventually, there’s only one way to save her: to split up. And to walk right into the lion’s den.
When everyone thinks they’re fighting each other for the same thing–freedom–can anyone truly win?”

pooled ink Review:
Thank you to Rosalyn Eves for sending me an eARC of the final book in her trilogy!!
I’m so excited to be a part of Rosalyn Eves’ street team and to get an advanced copy of the final book in the Blood Rose Rebellion trilogy!!! And at last I can share my review with you!
From the very beginning and true through the end this series spins a story of magic, folklore, history, and heart. Historical fantasy isn’t something I read often but I usually enjoy it when I do and this was no exception. I received an ARC for Blood Rose Rebellion and Eve’s debut made every book after a definite must-read on my list. But back to this book!
There is so much that happens it’s exhilarating and it’s all written with Eves’ signature lovely prose. The brutality of war is ever looming, the hunt for Noemi ever urgent, and the dream of peace and love ever yearning. This book picks up pretty close to where book two left off with Anna reunited with Mátyás and on the hunt for Noemi. Told in dual POVs it continues from there taking all sorts of twists and turns. This book does a great job of taking everything we’ve learned up to this point and building upon it to bring the story to new heights. The system of magic is further expanded upon and explored, the character development does not become stagnant but instead is pushed further than they ever believed they could be, and ultimately this book concludes their life-altering adventure in a satisfying way with fireworks to boot.
I don’t want to give anything away but I really love how Mátyás’ character has developed and Anna is a great heroine who achieves so much more than she ever believed she could bear or dream. And the folklore and praetherians are so interesting to meet! This series has its lead cast but it doesn’t allow its side characters to settle for second-rate which really helps round out the journey. Look, this is book three, and if you’ve reached this point then definitely push through to the end because if you enjoyed the premise and character direction of Blood Rose Rebellion then this finale will not disappoint. There are deaths and hardships to be sure but I think ultimately Eves ended the series well and as it needed to be.
Winter War Awakening is a stunning conclusion to this trilogy of fantasy and fate. Shining with hope in the thick of brutal rebellion, shedding blood for each player’s dream of freedom, and steady with the beat of a heart who knows victory cannot sacrifice goodness or else all dreams shatter. Written in Eves’ lovely prose this final installment will both twist your heart and satisfy the story’s journey.
