Shadows of the Forest by Emma Michaels (2016)

YA Fiction | Fantasy

Blurb:
“Everyone is dying to live in the Shadows of the Forest.
They gave me three rules to follow in exchange for my brother’s life:
1. Do not enter the West Wing;
2. Do not go outside after darkness falls; and
3. There is only one exit; The Gates.
This is what happened when I broke them…”

pooled ink Review:
Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy to review!
I know he would’ve done anything. He just should’ve known I’d do the same. -Lily
This book was not at all what I expected but overall I must say it was rather beautiful. It wove together a rich exquisite story about love, belonging, life and what comes after. I found it quite imaginative indeed.
Lily and Cole are twins with quite a deep and devoted connection but when one gasps on the cusp of death the other pleads to the forest offering anything to save their other half. Throughout their journey Lily discovers where she belongs, what she has to offer, and the strength hidden within her to finally live. Really this book is a love story, pure and simple, dark and true.
It’s not a very long book but it shares a fascinating world of grim reality, dreamlike fantasy, and the hope that bridges the two realms. Posing a rather uniquely spun take on life, death, and the walk in between, Shadows of the Forest sinks its roots into some of the deepest emotions within humans while drawing out their despair and lifting them above it with faith, love, and hope.
Cheers.
