The Viking’s Chosen (Clan Hakon #1) by Quinn Loftis (2018)

Fiction | Historical | Romance
Blurb:
“His orders are clear: launch a raid against England and bring home the spoils of war. But the prophecy is also clear: General Torben will take a foreign bride—one who is a seer and healer just like his mother. The eldest princess of England is said to be just that…a beautiful, charming, and headstrong woman. But he’s a Viking army general and she’s an English princess—and one who is already promised to the king of Tara.
Two worlds collide in this epic historical fiction centered on an undeniable chemistry that smolders against the odds. Richly written and injected with moments of humor, this action-packed romantic tale will leave you breathless.”

pooled ink Review:
Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy to review!
I was happy to receive this book to review as I love historical fiction, I love magic, and Vikings surely can only add the to intrigue of a good plot. Thankfully this turned out to be quite the entertaining read. I’d describe it as a cleaner and less traumatizing option for fans of Diana Gabaldon’s popular series, Outlander. Also instead of fierce Scottish warriors we are faced with mighty Vikings.
It did not take me long to read this book and it proved to be a fun read to kill time. The story wasn’t very complex or surprising but the characters were fun to read. The English princesses were all feisty and poised, the Vikings were fierce but noble (some of them anyway), and the enemy king was absolutely horrible casting him as a perfect villain that you couldn’t wait to have cut down.
There were some issues in the story however such as “convenient magic” where suddenly a bunch of “realizations” or rules for magic were unveiled that just happened to be convenient for the characters and/or their current situation. This is one of those details that I would skim past while reading because otherwise I’d get too irritated by it. Also the fact that each convenient revelation about magic came with an annoying speech to explain it. There were also moments of declarations about love and strength and duty that had me rolling my eyes (although if you like true true romance novels then this is probably exactly what you look forward to). BUT these things probably wouldn’t bother most people.
I enjoyed this book but it didn’t wow me. But if the opportunity arose for me to read the sequel then I’d at least consider it as, like I said earlier, this was a nice quick and fun read.
The Viking’s Chosen is the start to a romantic and battle-filled journey of hidden magic, warring kingdoms, and courage to forge a path of brighter light than what the world would have one believe. A princess who will not be broken, a Viking who would die for her, and a lecherous king carving their names in promised blood, this series is a perfect read for those who enjoy slipping into another time, another life.
Cheers.

Great review! I gave it a 3 as well. I loved the characters but there were too many other issues that frustrated me.

Thanks! Yeah I agree, the characters were mainly what kept me interested over the story.
