This story is part murder mystery and part paranormal thriller/romance. The plot centers around Kelia’s father’s murder and her determined desire to uncover the truth. For while the Society insists it was suicide and tries to hide the body, Kelia saw the truth for herself and knows it was no accident but cannot fathom what to think about it. She grew up with the Society and yet for the first time in her life she finds herself questioning everything she believes, especially when she takes a secret late night meeting with none other than the notorious Sea Shadow, Drew Knight.

I thought that this book took an interesting twist on vampires by tying them to the ocean. They can only touch land once dark and thus spend much of their lives battling with cutlass and claws on the sea. Both vampires and pirates are alluring topics so why not toss them together? I rather enjoyed the result!

Kelia was a decent heroine although at times she was rather slow at putting some obvious facts together and she definitely was a loose canon with her emotions (something Drew does not hesitate to point out and school her in). Besides these flaws however I liked her character. Drew, with his stoic abilities, managed to be an interesting mysterious character however it became plain quite quickly to see that he obviously was not some mindless beast and not an unfeeling monster like Kelia had grown up believing. Although Kelia was resistant to the idea despite blatant evidence proving otherwise it did drop some of the alluring mystery from his character by how clear it was to see his true nature (or at least this moral-guided side of it).

They worked well together though so it was an entertaining read for sure to follow them as they forge this uneasy (and what Kelia once believed impossible) alliance and move forwards to solve her father’s murder as well as expose the dark underbelly of the Society’s secrets.

This book wasn’t perfect, I admit. The pacing at times raced far too quickly while sometimes moving far too slow from getting caught up in describing every detail of a person or a room. I did however very much enjoy the premise for the story and the general execution. It was a quick, fun read that I actually would recommend to those searching for something different in the paranormal genre but don’t want to read anything too heavy.

Sea of Darkness shines with a unique collision of rogues as a top-student Slayer and a vampire pirate forge an alliance to expose the dark secrets the once-believed noble Society keeps hidden in its shadows. Exciting and entertaining, this isn’t a book to count out.
