BRN #17: Solar Eclipses & Magic Portals

Banner_babbles rambles and nonsense_17.png

So everyone near the zone for the solar eclipse is getting pretty excited, myself included because I’ve never seen one in person (and I’ll be in a city that is in the path of “totality” plus I mean, come on, this is the first time it’s going to cross the continental U.S. from coast to coast in about 100 years!). I’m lucky enough to be front and center for it all and the whole ancient mystery around it has me intrigued. (Okay fine it’s just basic science but play along, will ya?)  Continue reading

Cover Love

Banner_cover love.png

So today’s post is purely aesthetic 😊 We’ve discussed before how important a book’s cover is, it’s the first impression one usually gets with a book and can either convince you to whisk it off the shelf or wrinkle your nose in distaste. No one wants to be walking around reading a book with a stupid cover in public 😉 So I figured I’d put together this purely fun post where I share some of my favorite cover art! Continue reading

BRN #16: A Bookish Conundrum

Banner_babbles rambles and nonsense_16.png

Do you ever get so excited about a new book that you keep putting off reading it until you can find a perfect day with nothing but free time so that you can read this (hopefully) amazing book completely uninterrupted by anything other than maybe food, the occasional desperate bathroom break, and sleep (although you’ll push your body to its limits to stay up until you’ve finished the whole book)??  Continue reading

BRN #15: Bookish Turn-Offs

Chandler Bing reading book

As I’ve been sorting through my very overstuffed bookshelves I’ve stacked piles of books to part with. I don’t have the space and these are all books I doubt I’ll read again anyway. But then it got me thinking…what makes these different from the books I could never fathom letting go? So, I decided it might be fun to figure out what I don’t like to read in books. So I’ve put together a list of about 10 things that are bookish turn-offs for me (in no particular order).

As I made this list I realized a) it included things that I also don’t enjoy in movies/TV and b) that I’m very judgmental towards books. Lol  Continue reading

BRN #14: Poetic Ponderings

Banner_babbles rambles and nonsense_14.png

So I’m not generally a big poetry fanatic but every once in a while I stumble across a poem or hear someone perform a piece of spoken word and it strikes something in me. So today I don’t have a book review prepared for you but as it is National Poetry Month I thought I’d share a few poems that I love instead. Maybe you’ll like them or maybe you’re not big on poetry either. Either way I felt like sharing these. Maybe it’s my trip to the ocean that’s putting me in a poetic mood?
For this post I made sure to include a few poems about books since books are what we all love.

When Death Comes | Allowables | King Henry VIGood Books | Macbeth | Notes on the Art of Poetry | Old Books | The Gold Bell in Charn | The Arrow and The Song | Hades and Persephone | The Author to Her Book

BRN #13: Querying Agents

Banner_babbles rambles and nonsense_13.png

I’ve written a book (or two…or three). But I’m talking about the one that’s been through edits, revisions, and beta-readers. It’s YA. It’s Sci-Fi/Fantasy. And the few people who’ve read it assure me it’s good. But I tend not to trust the opinions of family and friends. Well…even if they lied and it’s terrible, at least I like it. I’m proud of it. I completed a task most people don’t even dare to attempt.

But now what? Well personally I’d love to land an agent and score a sweet book deal. There’s something annoyingly validating about having a stranger choose to pluck your book from anonymity and make it their job to have it shine. But it’s what I want and there seem to be rules and so off I go. Step one: Query Letter. Gross. Continue reading

BRN #12: Places, everyone!

stage shadow hands

Some of you may know that I have participated in the NaNoWriMo challenge for two years now (2015 & 2016). I took up the challenge last year because I needed something to give my mind a project with a deadline and participating brought me some sanity. I decided to accept the challenge again this year because it seems it makes an excellent motivator for me and my writing. Anyway, I was sitting here musing about my book and thought I’d share a few thoughts with you.  Continue reading

BRN #11: Presidential Dog Fight of 2016 for the Prized Bone called the U.S. of A.

Banner_babbles rambles and nonsense_11.png

I know I’m writing this last minute in the season but I just can’t keep my mind from endlessly spinning around this unavoidable topic. It plagues me on social media, traditional media, and even the people I see day to day. I can’t get away from it, but thanks goodness I am trained at holding my tongue. I’ve avoided publicly voicing my opinions because no one wants to hear another person’s opinions unless they align with theirs. We like to think we’re open-minded but more often than not we tend to be quite close-minded indeed, myself included. Anyway, I decided to write a little about what my cyclic thoughts have been pondering. This by no means encapsulates all of my thoughts or opinions but it’s a start and there is just something surprisingly therapeutic about voicing your thoughts…well, it’s therapeutic until some rogue who disagrees explodes in your face. I’m really hoping that doesn’t happen, but if it does, well, I’m sorry you have nothing better to do than spit on your neighbor.

What the heck do I know? Maybe very little. Maybe nothing at all. All I know is that I’m a 22-year old “legally blind” biracial woman living in a broken world who is afraid to give up but is also very tired of hoping that anything will truly change. This is just a few of my unasked for thoughts on the United States of America’s presidential election of 2016. Read at your own risk 😉

book come to life

Do you ever genuinely picture yourself in the books you read? Whether as a bystander, a co-star, or even the protagonist? Have you ever really wondered or wished for what life might be like if you could truly step inside a story? …maybe I was just a weird kid.  Continue reading
