YA Novella | Dystopian Sci-Fi4.5 starsBlurb:

“Alone in the darkness, memories threaten to overwhelm him. The truth of what has happened haunts him day and night. It would be easy to let go. To forget who he was and where he came from. Easier if he didnt exist anymore at all. Every moment is a reminder of what he had and what he has lost. But there is one thing worth living for, fighting for, breathing for. He made a promise. And he intends to honour it.”

pooled ink Review:

Thank you to the author for submitting this book for review!

Well well well Ms. Valenti. What have we here?

Embers is a Cage of Lies novella that takes place at the same time as Broken (Cage of Lies #3) and fills us in on Coal’s life in the walled city. Everyone in Broken believed Coal to be dead and although perhaps he should be he survived.

Coal’s imprisonment is pretty intense but his strength is unwavering and impressive. We all fell in love with Coal from the moment we met him in Chained (Cage of Lies #1) but with every page about him he just becomes more and more attractive and intriguing.

This is just a short little ditty but it is well written, well paced, and filled with details that we all have been dying to know from the moment we found out he was alive at the very end of Book 3. I loved it! Embers is a fantastic short story with thrilling drama and a highly anticipated build up to Coal’s reunion with Maya. After reading Book 3 I mentioned how I am dying to read what comes next and reading this novella has only doubled that desire. Coal and Maya back together?? All is right with the world! Now let’s take out our enemies together!

I’d highly recommend fans of the Cage of Lies series to read this novella after reading Broken. But yes, do indeed give it a read!

Cheers.

P.S. Lucretia has a seriously twisted dark side (did you see that creepy sadistic desire flash in her eyes as she held that scalpel???). “Extreme questioning” Ha! What a politician-like way of spinning words.
